What
is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient system of healthcare which has been developed over the
past 2000 years. In Chinese Medicine, good health is dependant on the body’s qi –
or vital energy – flowing smoothly and freely along a series of channels (meridians) in the body.
Sometimes this flow of qi is disrupted by our busy
lifestyles, difficult emotions or physical injury. In Chinese Medicine, it is believed that this restriction
of the flow of qi can affect the following areas of life:
Movement without restriction or pain
Sleep
Vitality
Emotional
well-being
Fertility
An acupuncturist is trained to identify patterns of disharmony in the body
through a combination of careful questioning and subtle diagnosis of your pulse and tongue. A personal treatment plan is then
created for you.
By inserting very fine needles in specific points along the channels of energy, your body’s
own healing response is stimulated. Often there is an improvement not only in the symptoms but in your
overall wellbeing and vitality.
What is Tui Na Massage?
Tui na is one of four
main branches of traditional Chinese medicine, the others being acupuncture, herbal medicine and Qi Gong
(a form of exercise). Tui
na is a physical therapy and a form of energetic medicine. It uses massage and gentle manipulation to stimulate the energy
channels which run throughout the body, the points along these channels and the soft tissues, sinews and organs.
How does Tui na differ from other forms of
massage? Tui na differs from other
forms of massage in that it is used to treat specific illnesses of an internal nature as well as musculoskeletal ailments.
The Tui na practitioner must have a thorough understanding of the rationale and philosophy of Oriental Medicine in order to
make a diagnosis according to its principles and formulate a plan of treatment suitable for the patient.
